Torch Club ‘Keeps it Clean’

TorchHygieneVolunteers came to the Carl & Alleen McKinney Unit of the Boys & Gils Club of Benton County on Tuesday, November 18th to help members of the Torch Club learn about proper hygiene.  To get points across the group played some games and engaged in interactive activities.  Ms. Leah, the Torch Club adviser said the kids “had a blast while discussing a ‘touchy’ subject. Everyone had a great time and got some solid information about ‘keeping it clean’.”

HLM Holds Halloween Party

Halloween 1 (2)The HLM Teen Center of the Boys & girls Club of Benton County held its annual Halloween party.  In between the tricks and  camaraderie there were plenty of treats to go around.

Rogers Kids Build 747 Gliders

Rog-AeroThanks to funding from the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium, Rogers and Bella Vista kids will be engaged in a variety of hands on S.T.E.A.M activities that will involve aerodynamics and flight.  Here Boys & Girls Club of Benton County Rogers Unit kids are building 747 gliders.  Once build they will experiment with different wing shapes and weight shifts that may affect the flight of their gliders.  Thanks to the grant funds, activities of this nature will be ongoing through May of 2015.

McKinney Unit Fall Festival

cam FF-14Although it feels like winter, the Carl & Alleen McKinney Unit of the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County recently held a Fall Festival complete with a “very spooky” haunted house.  Staff dressed-up in costumes and ushered kids in line waiting to go into the haunted house. During the festival Duck Dynasty Celebrities (staff members) set-up games in the gym area, where kids competed for a variety of ‘valuable’ prizes.

Football Season Winds Down

ToybowlThe 2014 Football Season is all but a memory.  It was a great year full of fun and competition. While the younger teams competed in the Toy bowl, the 7th grade teams memorialized their fallen friend and teammate Floyd Smith, who passed away early in the season.  As the teams were announced, each player placed their jersey at the 22 yard line –  Floyd’s number was 22. Seen here in In black is Lincoln, Washington is red, and Fulbright is green.  Some new equipment in 2014 was made possible through an “All-Stars” grant from Buffalo Wild Wings

Roger Unit Alvarado Family Wins Family Plus Cook-Off

Cookoff102314_66The finals for the local Family PLUS (Parent Leading, Uniting, and Serving) Cook-Off competition were held on October 23rd at the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County Carl and Alleen McKinney Unit from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Families included the Alvarado Family, Colt Stacy’s Team, Robinson Family, and Ayala Family. At the local event, each family finalist was assigned a cooking station – all stocked with the same ingredients. Fifteen minutes into the competition the secret ingredient, blueberries, was introduced and used by each family. The objective of the Cook-Off is for each family to use the ingredients to make the most mouthwatering theme dish in just one hour. Dishes were judged based on presentation, conformance to the theme, taste, and originality. Although the judging was close, the winning family team was the Alvarado Family from the Rogers Unit.
Marissa Kargas, anchor for KNWA-TV news was the master of ceremonies for the event. Event judges include State Senator Bart Hester, Pinnacle International Real Estate Group; John Scholes, VP Walmart International at Kimberly-Clark; Scott Winchester, Director of Sales with Blue Rhino; and Trent Weller, VP Beverages Sam’s Club.

Representative Dotson Supports Boys & Girls Club

DotsonThe Boys & Girls Club of Benton County received a $5,000 grant through the Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District. The grant will enable more program space and the further installation of security cameras to enhance the safety of our kids at the Carl & Alleen McKinney Unit in Bentonville.  The grant was facilitated through the support of State Representative Jim Dotson.  Representative Dotson has been a long-time champion of the children of Benton County.

Launching Careers

CAREER LAUNCHThe Boys & Girls Club of Benton County Career Launch program assists youth in exploring career choices and identifying postsecondary educational requirements to achieve them.  On Thursday, October 30th architect Dennis Wilson came to the Bella Vista Unit to speak to the teens about a career architecture, his work, and the education needed to get into the field.  Thank you Dennis!

Volleyball Winds Down Season

vbChampsThere were many winners in the 2014 Volleyball season.  In the 4th and 5th grade league the Badgers won the Sportsmanship award while the Volunteers were the Finalist and Lions were the Champions.  In the 6th and 7th grade league the Bears won the Sportsmanship award while the Hawkeyes were the Finalists and the Sooners were the Champions.
